The Puente program embarked on their biennial Northern California trip on March 21st 2018 with hopes of giving young Puentistas a growing foundation off which they can evolve their personal goals as to what schools they’d like to apply to when the time comes. When Jennifer Guerra was asked how she felt this trip was helpful to her, she responded with “This trip helped me broaden my horizons to new locations and new campuses that I had never thought of applying to in the future.” Every student has their own aspirations as to where their next step in life after high school shall continue. As younger kids we were only exposed to the public opinion of others, often pinning our dream to a prestigious college we’ve never step foot on.

Many recall a sense of belonging once they walk through campus, so I asked Jennifer Guerra if her perspectives changed on any universities visited on this trip. Jennifer stated, “Sometimes all you here around school is the big school names like Berkeley or Stanford, sometimes locals like Hartnell. It was very helpful to get out of that bubble and explore many new possibilities. I went on this trip with at least three colleges that I was certain that I’d be applying to and left with many more.” After high school, your college campus will be your home, so being able to step on and feel as though you belong is an important factor when deciding where you will spend the next step of your life.
